what is HYPERTENSION? what are its causes?

HYPERTENSION (high blood pressure) and its causes

high blood pressure means systolic pressure more than 140 mm of mercury and diastolic pressure more than 90 mm of mercury which is often written by physicians as 140/90 mm of Hg where 140 is systolic blood pressure , 90 is diastolic blood pressure and Hg means mercury

causes of hypertension

  1. Stress:- It may be in the form of worry about job or financial adjustments
  2. High salt intake:- salt contains sodium which causes rise in blood pressure
  3. Lack of daily exercise:- daily exercise enables effective blood flow to the organs and enhances function of the heart lacking which one can develop hypertension
  4. Hereditary:- It contributes very less for the development of hypertension yet it is an important factor

Effects of prolonged hypertension

  1. Hypertensive heart disease:- Heart has to push blood harder as pressure against blood flow is more.As a result , heart muscle increases in thickness to do more work and it needs more oxygen but it cannot get enough oxygen hence "aches for it".If it occurs repeatedly or for a longer time it leads to death of the heart muscle called as myocardial infarction(commonly called as heart attack)
  2. Stroke:- Risk of stroke in a person with high blood pressure is 4-6 times more when compared to a person with normal blood pressure
  3. Kidney disease:- Hypertension damages blood vessels that supply blood to the kidneys. This leads to death of kidney tissue and kidney failure
  4. Eye disease:- High blood pressure damages blood vessels in the eye leading to loss of vision

How to prevent HYPERTENSION and its EFFECTS?

  1. Reduction of stress
  2. Low salt diet:- daily salt intake must not exceed 5 mg/day but an average adult consumes 15 mg/day.A person with hypertension must consume at least less than 3 mg/day or even salt restriction is better
  3. Daily exercise for at least half an hour.If not fit for exercise brisk walking for half an hour or a mile a day is enough. If a person is heart patient mild walking is necessary and should not push themselves physically
